Let us introduce our team of experienced, educated professionals:

Some of the current team for 2020

Laurel Walker Teacher/Director
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)
Laurel is our Teaching Director and works full time. She has been part of our team since 2004.

“I initially came to St Peters preschool as a student whilst studying for my Bachelor of Education.  I was doing a prac placement and absolutely fell in love with the place and they fell in love with me too.  I started undertaking casual work and when a vacancy came up for a teacher they offered me the position in 2004.  I applied for the role of Director when the incumbent left in 2006 and have been here ever since.

Having been here now for 12 years I am still amazed at how much this job challenges, inspires and motivates me.  Working with children I always feel is a privilege,  and I am humbled that families in our community choose us to care for them.

I love most things about my job, the inspiring and talented team I work with; the families I meet; the changes that occur in the early childhood field; but mostly I just love “hanging” out with the children – forming relationships with them, getting to know them, sharing stories together, learning from them and laughing at their jokes!  It is the children that continue to inspire me in this job.

My favourite place within the preschool is our outdoor environment, we have worked hard to make it a welcoming and beautiful space – I like to do gardening with the children, one of our latest projects is making seed bombs!

I have had many jobs over the years.  I grew up in New Zealand and came to Australia after a short time spent in London.  My most recent job before I came to St Peters was as a Human Resources Manager with Caltex here in Sydney.  So you can see I had a complete career change and have never regretted my decision for one minute.”

Vanna Lockwood  Educational Leader and Early Childhood Teacher
Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)
Vanna works on Wednesdays, and has been a part of our team since 2006.

“I have worked at St Peters since 2006 when I began as a support worker for children with additional needs. Over the next few years I increased my hours and in 2011 I took on the role of Educational Leader.

I love the dynamic nature of working with children and families – no day is the same as the last, and each child and group of children brings joy and challenges to me as a teacher. I am particularly interested in bringing the qualities of compassion, kindness and respect to the forefront of education, and learning alongside children through play and respectful listening to their voices and ideas.

As the Educational Leader I enjoy keeping up to date with current research and thinking in our field. I love the culture of reflection and openness to change as we strive to keep learning and developing as educators at St Peters.

I have worked for around 25 years in the early childhood field – as a teacher in long day care;  as an adult educator – at Macquarie University Institute of Early Childhood (where I still teach casually), and at TAFE (I am currently a part -time teacher at Petersham TAFE) – teaching early childhood education students and practicum supervising; and as a consultant speaking to families and educators about relaxation for children and spirituality. Way back in my past I also worked with adults with intellectual disabilities and as a receptionist for a chiropractor.

I love living in the Inner West with my family – partner, 2 adult children, and big dog, and being part of the vibrant and diverse community that St Peters Preschool is part of.”

Maria Da Silva Early Childhood Educator
Associate Diploma in Child Studies
Maria works with the children Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and has been part of our team since 2001.

“Hello my name is Maria Da Silva and I am a child care diploma graduate with 32 years of experience. I have been at St Peters Preschool for 15 years.

What I love about my job is that no two days are ever the same. I love being a part of the growth and development of the children and creating bonds and memories with them and their families.

Before St Peters Preschool I worked in a private long day care centre. I was a Child Development Officer for Botany Family dare care and worked in one of their long day care centres. I also did casual work for SDN (Sydney Day Nursery’s) Children’s Services.

I was born in Madeira (Portugal) and arrived in Australia when I was 8yrs old. I am a single mum with a 20yr old daughter. When I am not working I enjoy spending quality time with my daughter. I also enjoy long walks, reading, movies, going to the beach, gardening and dining out.”

Hello my name is Sarah Nobrega and from a very young age I always knew I had a passion for Early Childhood. After graduating from high school in the year 2009 I studied at Petersham TAFE my Certificate III in Children Services and also completed my Diploma in Children Services. I then further continued my studies at Western Sydney University where I completed a four year degree to become an Early Childhood Teacher.

After my studies I was lucky to have been given opportunities where I learnt and built my knowledge in the early childhood industry. I was Assisting Director for a maternity leave position for one year and was also a non-teaching Director for a Year in 2016.

I learnt a lot within those roles but I missed working directly with the children. Throughout my studies I was lucky to complete one of my work placements at St Peters Community Preschool. I loved how the preschool operated and I felt I also shared the same philosophy. I knew that this was a community I always wanted to be part of, which came true.

I have recently (in 2017) joined the St Peters Community Preschool team as a part time teacher. I enjoy working with the children and being part of a wonderful team ☺ please feel free to come in and say hello.
